A Dryer That Tumbles Cold: What to Check, in Order

The phrase people type includes the word reset, and the honest answer is that there is very little to reset on a dryer that makes no heat. What there is, on an electric machine, is a supply case worth checking before anything is bought: an electric dryer runs its motor on one leg of a 240-volt circuit and its heating element on both, so half the supply missing gives you a machine that tumbles perfectly and produces no heat at all. That is a breaker or a connection, not the dryer. On a gas machine the equivalent is the burner sequence — igniter, valve, flame sensor — which Samsung reports as HC2, and watching one start attempt separates the three parts. On both, check the duct, because a blocked one takes out thermal cut-outs and those are what people replace. On a heat-pump dryer there is no element at all and a cold machine is a refrigeration problem.

How do I reset my Samsung dryer not heating? First, decide which machine you have

Samsung sells three dryers that look almost identical from the front and make heat in three completely different ways.

Vented electric. An element, a set of thermostats, a thermal cut-out and a relay. The air is heated and pushed out of the house.

Vented gas. A burner: an igniter that glows, a gas valve that opens, and a flame sensor that confirms the flame so the valve stays open. Same airflow, entirely different heat source.

Ventless heat pump. No element and no burner at all. Heat is moved rather than made, using a sealed refrigeration circuit, and the air is recirculated rather than exhausted.

Everything below depends on which of the three is in your laundry room, and the model number says so — DVE for electric, DVG for gas, and the ventless machines are named as such in the description.

The circuit a built-in refrigerator should be on A straight path from the electrical panel through its own breaker, to its own receptacle, optionally through a refrigeration surge protector with a restart delay, and into the refrigerator. A dedicated circuit and a direct connection are two separate requirements. Satisfying one does not excuse the other.

The electric case people miss

This is the one worth knowing before anybody buys a part.

An electric dryer is fed by a 240-volt circuit, which is two 120-volt legs. The motor, the light and the control run on one leg. The heating element needs both.

So if one leg is missing — a double breaker that has tripped on one side, a loose connection at the outlet, a damaged cord — you get a dryer that starts normally, tumbles perfectly, lights its panel, runs a full cycle, and produces no heat whatsoever.

It looks exactly like a failed element. It is not the dryer at all.

The first check is the breaker, and it has to be done properly: switch it fully off and fully on again. A double breaker can trip on one side while still looking closed, and flicking it halfway does nothing. If that does not restore heat, the voltage at the outlet needs measuring — and that is an electrician's job, not ours and not yours.

Samsung's own voltage codes on the dryer table — 9C1, 9E, 2E, 9E1 — are the machine reporting exactly this family of problem when it can see it.

The gas sequence, and how to read it

On a gas dryer, three things have to happen in order every time heat is called for.

The igniter glows — bright orange, visible through the burner housing on most machines. The gas valve opens. The flame lights, and a flame sensor confirms it so the valve stays open.

Samsung reports a failure of that sequence as HC2.

Watching one start attempt separates the three parts better than any amount of testing:

No glow at all. The igniter or its circuit.

Glows, and nothing lights. Usually the valve coils. This is the most common of the three.

Lights, burns for a few seconds, goes out, tries again. The flame sensor, or the valve closing early.

That last pattern — light, die, retry — is worth reporting exactly, because it is nearly conclusive.

Two rules on the gas side. Do not keep cycling it: repeated attempts do not help and they make the diagnosis harder by heating everything up. And if there is any smell of gas at all, stop, ventilate, and call.

Why the duct is on a heating page

Because it is behind more heating failures than any component.

A dryer has a high-limit thermostat and a thermal cut-out whose whole job is to shut the heat down if the machine overheats. The thing that makes a machine overheat is air that cannot leave. So a blocked duct produces a dryer that tumbles cold, with a blown cut-out, and the cut-out is what gets replaced.

Fit a new cut-out into the same blocked duct and it blows again — and the second time it has usually taken the element with it.

That is why every heating repair we do on a vented machine includes proving the airflow. Not as an upsell: as the thing that decides whether the repair lasts a week or five years.

Clean the lint screen properly — warm water and a soft brush, then run water at it, and if the water pools rather than passing through, the screen was blocked however clean it looked. Then the whole duct run, and the outside flap while the machine is going.

The heat pump case

A ventless heat-pump dryer that tumbles cold has no element to blame, because there isn't one.

Heat is produced by a small sealed refrigeration circuit — a compressor, a condenser, an evaporator — working the same way a refrigerator does, in reverse. If that circuit has stopped, the machine will tumble and move air and dry nothing.

Before assuming the worst, though: check the condenser and its filter. A heat-pump dryer with a clogged condenser is slow rather than cold, but slow enough is indistinguishable from cold to somebody standing in front of it. That filter needs cleaning far more often than owners are told, and a great many of them have never been opened.

If the condenser is clean and the machine genuinely produces no warmth at all, that is a sealed-circuit diagnosis and it is measured.

Where a reset does come into it

Some Samsung dryers have a thermal reset — a small button on the blower housing that pops when the machine overheats. If yours has one and it has tripped, pressing it restores the dryer.

Press it once. Then deal with the reason.

A thermal reset that has tripped is a message, and pressing it repeatedly without clearing the duct is the sequence that turns a free fix into an element and a control board.

What to tell us

Which of the three machines it is. Whether it tumbles normally. Whether the exhaust outside is genuinely cold or merely cool. And on a gas machine, what happens in the first two minutes of a start attempt — glow, no glow, light and die.

With those four, we can usually name the part before the visit rather than during it.

Questions people ask about this

There is a reset button on my dryer. Should I press it?

Some models have a thermal reset on the blower housing. If it has tripped, pressing it restores the machine — and it tripped for a reason, which is nearly always airflow. Press it once, then deal with the duct. Pressing it repeatedly is how a thermal cut-out ends up welded or an element ends up dead.

It heats for a while and then goes cold mid-cycle.

That is the classic cycling-thermostat picture and it points hard at airflow rather than at the heating parts. Have the duct done along its whole run before anything is replaced.

How do I know if I have lost half the supply?

A dryer that tumbles normally, lights its panel and produces no heat at all is the signature. Switch the breaker fully off and fully on — a double breaker can trip on one side and look closed. If that does not do it, the voltage at the outlet needs measuring, and that is an electrician rather than us.

Can I use it while I wait?

On an electric machine that tumbles cold, yes, though it will not dry. On a gas machine, or if there is any smell of gas at all, no — stop and call.
