Symptom

Samsung washer will not spin

Samsung's Ub and Ur codes mean the machine has decided the load cannot be spun safely, and most of the time it is right about the laundry. What turns it into a repair is when it happens with ordinary, well-distributed loads.

Five ordinary causes

What this usually turns out to be

Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.

In five minutes

Before you call anybody

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

  1. 01

    Run one even test load

Three or four similar towels, spread round the drum, spin only.

  2. 02

Push the corners of the cabinet

If it rocks, level it. The feet adjust and the lock nuts matter.

  3. 03

    Check it drained

A drum with water in it will never spin, and that is a different page.

  4. 04

Listen at the start of the spin

A motor that tries and stops is different from one that never starts.

How it shows up

What people describe when they call

  • “Ur means the machine is retrying, not complaining”
  • “One heavy item is the most common single cause”
  • “A machine that rocks on the floor will never spin cleanly”
Three small unbranded appliance components laid out on a clean workbench mat under a single work light — a pump housing, a small motor and a sensor with a lead.

A shortcut

Narrow it down before anybody arrives

A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.

In more detail

About Samsung washer will not spin

Try one even load

Take everything out, put in a few similar towels spread evenly round the drum, and run a spin on its own. If that spins, the machine is healthy and the problem is loading — a single bath sheet or a duvet is enough. If it will not spin an even load, it is the machine.

What it usually means, by the kind of Samsung appliance

Samsung sells one appliance in several forms, and the same behavior points at different things on each of them. A built-in side-by-side and an integrated column are not the same service situation, and a dual-fuel range and an induction range fail in different halves.

  • Front load — Suspension rods and shock absorbers carry the drum. Worn ones let it move too far and the machine gives up.
  • Top load — A clutch decides whether the drum agitates or spins, and Samsung publishes PC for its position.
  • FlexWash — The upper and lower units spin independently. Establish which one is failing.

What Ur is actually telling you

Samsung distinguishes between a machine that has given up and one that is trying again. Ur — unbalanced load retry — means it is about to add water, redistribute the load and try the spin once more. It makes the cycle longer and it is not a report of anything broken. Ub and the others are the machine saying it cannot proceed.

Level is not cosmetic

A front-load washer at 1,200 rpm generates enormous forces, and every one of them is transmitted through four feet into the floor. A machine that is not sitting flat, or that has a foot's lock nut loose, will walk, will trigger balance protection, and will wear its own suspension out doing it. Leveling is free and it is done on every visit.

Questions about Samsung washer will not spin

It spins on some cycles and not others.

That fits load type rather than machine: bulky items, or a small load with one heavy piece, are what produce this. A cycle with a lower spin speed will often complete where a fast one aborts.

There is a burning smell when it tries.

Stop using it and call. A belt or a motor that is being asked to turn something that will not move is the one version of this that should not be run again.
