Samsung dryer not drying

On a vented dryer this is airflow far more often than heat, and airflow means the duct — which is not inside the appliance, which is why it survives so many service calls. On a heat-pump machine it is usually the condenser or its filter.

Five ordinary causes

What this usually turns out to be

Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.

In five minutes

Before you call anybody

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

  1. 01

Wash the lint screen and run water at it

If the water pools instead of passing straight through, that is your answer.

  2. 02

Check the outside flap while it runs

It should be open and moving air you can feel.

  3. 03

    Feel the exhaust

Strong warm airflow at the outside vent means the duct is clear.

  4. 04

On a heat-pump machine, find the condenser filter

It is behind a panel at the bottom and it needs cleaning regularly.

How it shows up

What people describe when they call

  • “The duct is part of the appliance, and it is where this usually lives”
  • “A lint screen with softener film on it looks clean and passes almost no air”
  • “Heat-pump dryers fail completely differently and are diagnosed differently”
A dark kitchen photographed from low down, with the row of cycle indicator lights on the front of a dishwasher glowing softly and completely out of focus — points of cool light against deep blue, no shapes and no characters resolvable.

A shortcut

Narrow it down before anybody arrives

A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.

About Samsung dryer not drying

Clean the screen properly, then check the flap

Wash the lint screen in warm water with a soft brush — a screen coated with fabric softener film looks perfectly clean and passes almost no air, and you can test it by running water at it. Then go outside while the dryer is running and check the vent flap actually opens.

What it usually means, by the kind of Samsung appliance

Samsung sells one appliance in several forms, and the same behavior points at different things on each of them. A built-in side-by-side and an integrated column are not the same service situation, and a dual-fuel range and an induction range fail in different halves.

  • Vented electric — Duct, lint screen, then the element and its thermostats.
  • Vented gas — Same airflow list, then the igniter, valve and flame sensor.
  • Ventless heat pump — No duct at all. The condenser and its filter carry the whole job, and they need cleaning far more often than owners expect.

Heat is not the same as drying

A dryer removes water by carrying it away in moving air. If the air cannot move, no amount of heat will dry the load — it will simply get hotter and trip a thermal cut-out. That is why a machine that is clearly hot inside and still leaves clothes damp is an airflow complaint, and why replacing an element on a blocked duct means doing the job twice.

The ventless case

A heat-pump dryer has no duct, so all of the above moves inside the machine: a condenser that has to stay clean, a filter in front of it, and a drain path for the water it collects. These machines are slower by design, so 'not drying' has to be measured against what they were ever going to do — but a condenser filter that has never been cleaned turns a slow machine into a useless one.

Questions about Samsung dryer not drying

It dries fine on a hot day and badly when it rains.

That fits a marginal duct: humid outside air makes a restricted vent worse. It is a strong hint that the duct is the problem rather than the machine.

How often should the duct be cleaned?

Once a year for most households, more if the run is long, has bends, or the household does a lot of laundry. It is the cheapest maintenance on this site.
