Symptom

Samsung dishwasher not cleaning

Samsung makes a point on their own support pages that matches what we find: when something is genuinely wrong with a dishwasher, it usually shows up as filling, draining or an error as well. Cleaning alone, with everything else normal, is far more often loading, detergent, water temperature or a blocked arm.

Five ordinary causes

What this usually turns out to be

Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.

In five minutes

Before you call anybody

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

  1. 01

Run the hot tap before starting

Until it runs hot. Then start the machine.

  2. 02

    Spin both arms by hand

They should turn freely and every hole should be clear.

  3. 03

    Clean the filter

And look at what comes off it.

  4. 04

    Check the loading

Nothing overhanging into an arm's path, nothing nested, and bowls facing down.

  5. 05

Check the detergent is not old

Powder and tablets lose effectiveness after a year in a humid kitchen.

How it shows up

What people describe when they call

  • “If nothing else is wrong, this is usually not a repair”
  • “Inlet water temperature is the most common single cause”
  • “WaterWall, Linear Wash and StormWash each fail differently”
The unlit front of an appliance in a dark kitchen with a soft cool glow along one edge of it, shot close and at an angle so that no display, no digits and no controls are legible.

A shortcut

Narrow it down before anybody arrives

A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.

If there is no code at all

The data plate is inside the cabinet, upper left wall or behind the grille. All models

About Samsung dishwasher not cleaning

Run the tap first

Run the kitchen hot tap until it is genuinely hot, then start the dishwasher. A machine fed with the cold water sitting in the pipe never recovers the temperature during the cycle, and on a short program it will not clean or dry properly however healthy it is. It is free, and it changes the result more often than any part.

What it usually means, by the kind of Samsung appliance

Samsung sells one appliance in several forms, and the same behavior points at different things on each of them. A built-in side-by-side and an integrated column are not the same service situation, and a dual-fuel range and an induction range fail in different halves.

  • WaterWall — A reflector sweeps the tub. Blocked or obstructed, it cleans one end and not the other — and Samsung has a code for it, 7E.
  • Linear Wash — A moving bar rather than a rotating arm. The same logic applies: check its path is clear.
  • StormWash and rotary — Conventional arms, so blocked jets and a tall item stopping an arm are the usual causes.

Why temperature matters more than anything else

Dishwasher detergent is chemistry and chemistry runs on heat. Below about 120°F the enzymes that break down food do very little and the surfactants that lift grease do less. A machine plumbed to a cold line, or fed from a long pipe run that has to be flushed first, is working at a disadvantage on every cycle.

The uneven-cleaning tell

Dishes clean at one end of the rack and dirty at the other is a mechanical clue, not a chemical one. On a rotary machine that is an arm that cannot turn; on a WaterWall it is a reflector that cannot travel, which Samsung reports as 7E; on Linear Wash it is the bar's path. Evenly poor cleaning everywhere is temperature, detergent or the filter.

Questions about Samsung dishwasher not cleaning

White film on everything, especially glass.

That is usually rinse aid and water hardness rather than the machine. South Florida water leaves deposits, and a machine that has never had rinse aid in it shows this first on glass.

It got worse after I switched detergent.

Then the detergent is a real suspect. Gel is generally weaker than a tablet, and some tablets need a longer program than the one being run to dissolve fully.
