Samsung refrigerator leaking water

Where the water shows up is what identifies it, so it is worth looking before you mop. Water under the crisper drawers, water on the floor at the front, and water at the back of the cabinet are three different repairs, and on this make one of them is a small heater that costs very little.

Five ordinary causes

What this usually turns out to be

Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.

In five minutes

Before you call anybody

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

  1. 01

Photograph where the water is before you clean it up

It is the single most useful thing you can do, and it takes ten seconds.

  2. 02

    Check what changed recently

A new filter, a new cabinet position, a recent power outage.

  3. 03

Pull the cabinet out and look at the floor behind it

Water at the back is a supply line or a drain pan; water at the front is usually internal.

  4. 04

Open the crispers and look underneath

Standing water there is the defrost drain, effectively every time.

How it shows up

What people describe when they call

  • “Where the water sits narrows it more than anything else”
  • “A blocked defrost drain is the most common cause and it is inexpensive”
  • “The water line and the filter head are the other half”
An open canvas tool bag set down on a kitchen floor in front of a run of cabinets, a folded protective mat beside it, hand tools visible but unbranded and out of focus.

A shortcut

Narrow it down before anybody arrives

A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.

If there is no code at all

The data plate is inside the cabinet, upper left wall or behind the grille. All models

About Samsung refrigerator leaking water

Look before you wipe

Note exactly where the water is: under the crisper drawers, at the front of the floor, at the back near the wall, or inside a door compartment. Then check the last thing that changed — a water filter fitted in the last few weeks that is not quite seated is one of the most common causes of a refrigerator that suddenly started leaking.

What it usually means, by the kind of Samsung appliance

Samsung sells one appliance in several forms, and the same behavior points at different things on each of them. A built-in side-by-side and an integrated column are not the same service situation, and a dual-fuel range and an induction range fail in different halves.

  • French door — Water under the crispers is almost always the defrost drain, which runs from the evaporator down through the back of the cabinet and freezes shut.
  • Side-by-side with a dispenser — The line to the door and the filter head are both in play, and a filter that was not seated properly on the last change is very common.
  • Cabinets with Autofill — Samsung publishes 76C for water detected in the Autofill compartment, and a blinking Autofill indicator means the same thing.

Three different repairs behind one word

A refrigerator that leaks is not one problem. Melt water that cannot drain, supply water escaping, and humid air condensing where it should not be are three separate mechanisms with three different prices, and they are told apart by where the water appears rather than by how much of it there is.

Why the defrost drain freezes at all

The drain carries melt water from the evaporator down to a pan under the cabinet, where the compressor's heat evaporates it. If anything narrows that line — debris, or a small piece of ice that did not clear on the last cycle — the next cycle's water freezes on top of it. Once it has started it gets worse every cycle, which is why it goes from nothing to a puddle inside a fortnight.

Questions about Samsung refrigerator leaking water

There is water in the drip pan underneath. Is that a leak?

No, that pan is where melt water is supposed to go. It is a problem only if it overflows, which usually means the cabinet is defrosting far more often than it should be.

It only leaks in summer.

Then it is very likely condensation rather than a leak, and the seals are what to look at. Warm wet air meeting a cold surface produces water, and August in Miami supplies plenty of both.
