# Samsung ice maker not making ice

### Three things that cost nothing

Take the bucket out and put it back, pushing until it seats — a blinking Ice Off indicator means exactly this and it stops production completely. Check the ice maker has not been switched off on the panel. And check the water: if the dispenser gives you water normally, the supply is not the problem, which removes half the list in ten seconds.

### What it usually means, by the kind of Samsung appliance

Samsung sells one appliance in several forms, and the same behavior points at different things on each of them. A built-in side-by-side and an integrated column are not the same service situation, and a dual-fuel range and an induction range fail in different halves.

- **In-door ice maker** — Has its own compartment, its own seal and its own small fan — Samsung's 40E. Frost around the bucket points here.
- **Fridge-compartment ice maker** — Lives in the fresh-food side and depends on a duct from the freezer. It is the layout most affected by a cabinet packed full.
- **Bottom or top freezer** — The simplest arrangement, and the one where the fill tube and its heater matter most.
- **Cubed and Ice Bites** — A dedicated assembly that makes two shapes, with its own reset procedure.

### Five machines, one complaint

Samsung puts ice makers in the freezer door, in the fresh-food compartment, in the bottom of a bottom-freezer cabinet, in the top of a top-freezer, and in a dedicated cubed and Ice Bites assembly. Those have different fill paths, different sensors and — as Samsung’s five separate support articles show — different reset procedures. Naming the layout is the first genuinely useful thing you can do.

### Why there are no codes here

Samsung publishes none for ice makers. The related codes that exist — 8E, 14E, 33E, 39E, 40E — are on the refrigerator table. That is why this page is built around what the machine is doing rather than what it is displaying, and why we ask more questions on the phone about this appliance than about any other.

The bucket not seated

Samsung shows this as a blinking Ice Off indicator. Free, and far more common than it should be.

A frozen fill tube

Samsung's 33E heater keeps it clear. When it stops, the tube ices shut and the machine quietly stops filling.

The compartment is not cold enough

Ice production is driven by temperature. A compartment that has drifted up starves a healthy ice maker.

Water supply or filter

A filter well past its interval, or a supply valve that has silted closed.

The module or its sensor

Samsung's 8E, 14E and 39E. Diagnosed last because everything above is cheaper.

Reseat the bucket

All the way out and all the way back in. Watch for a blinking Ice Off indicator.

Check the ice maker is switched on

It is a setting on the panel and it gets turned off by accident.

Try the water dispenser

Water flowing normally proves the supply, the valve and the filter in one action.

Look at the fill tube

A visible plug of ice at the tube is the heater, and that is a smaller repair than an ice maker.

The bin is empty and nothing is happening

What it usually means

A bucket that is not fully seated stops production silently

Five cabinet layouts, five different mechanisms and five different resets

No codes are published for this appliance — the behavior is the evidence

### It worked until we changed the water filter.

Then start there. A filter that is not fully seated, or an aftermarket cartridge that does not quite match, restricts flow enough to stop ice while still giving you water at the dispenser. Refit the original properly and give it a day.

### How long should it take to make ice after a reset?

Give it a full day before drawing conclusions. The compartment has to be at temperature and the first harvest cycles are slow. Judging it after two hours is how people end up paying for a machine that was working.
