# Samsung freezer not freezing

### Check the setting before anything else

On any convertible compartment, look at what it has been told to be. A FlexZone set to refrigerate is doing exactly what it was asked to do, and it is the single most common explanation for a freezer that stopped freezing overnight with no other symptom.

### What it usually means, by the kind of Samsung appliance

Samsung sells one appliance in several forms, and the same behavior points at different things on each of them. A built-in side-by-side and an integrated column are not the same service situation, and a dual-fuel range and an induction range fail in different halves.

- **4-Door Flex and FlexZone** — The compartment has a setting that decides whether it freezes at all, and it is changed by accident more often than anything else in the kitchen.
- **Bottom and top freezer** — One cooling system serves both compartments, so check whether the fresh-food side is also off before assuming the freezer.
- **Convertible upright** — Samsung's standalone freezer. It is the only one of the three that is a freezer and nothing else, and it has its own setting to check.

### Why there is no code list on this page

Samsung publishes no error codes for freezers. The one freezer-related code that exists, 21E for the freezer fan, is printed on the refrigerator table because that is where Samsung puts it. Rather than borrow a table from another appliance or another maker, this page carries the diagnosis instead — which is what the appliance actually gives you to work with.

### The convertible trap

Samsung sells more convertible compartments than anyone else in this fleet, and every one of them can be told to stop freezing. It is a feature, it is on the panel, and it is the reason we ask what kind of cabinet you have before we ask anything else.

A convertible compartment set to refrigerate

Free, common, and the first thing we ask about on a Flex cabinet.

The evaporator fan

Samsung's 21E, and usually ice on the fan rather than a dead motor.

Frost on the evaporator

Airflow falls away gradually; the temperature follows.

A door that is not sealing

A freezer door that is held open a few millimeters by a basket will never hold temperature.

Read the setting on any convertible compartment

Freeze or refrigerate. It is on the panel and it takes ten seconds.

Measure it with a thermometer

Between packages, not against the wall, and after an hour. A freezer should sit around 0°F.

Check the door closes and stays closed

A drawer overfilled at the back holds a freezer door open a fraction, all day.

Look for frost patterns

Frost on everything is a door or a seal. Frost only at the back is the evaporator.

Soft ice cream, and everything else on its way

What it usually means

A FlexZone or 4-Door Flex compartment may simply be set to refrigerate

Samsung publishes no freezer codes — the symptom is the diagnosis

Airflow and door seal before anything expensive

### The freezer is soft but the fridge is fine.

On a cabinet where one system serves both, that is unusual and specific — it usually means the cold is being made and diverted, or that a convertible compartment has been reset. On a standalone upright it is simply the freezer.

### How cold should it actually be?

Around 0°F for a freezer and about 37°F for the fresh-food side. Measure it rather than reading the panel — the panel is one of the things being tested.
