# Samsung frost building up in the freezer

### Where the frost is tells you what it is

Frost on everything, evenly, is warm air getting in — a door, a seal or a drawer that does not close. Frost only on the back panel or the evaporator behind it is the defrost circuit. Frost only around the ice bucket is the ice compartment's own seal. Look before you clear it.

### What it usually means, by the kind of Samsung appliance

Samsung sells one appliance in several forms, and the same behavior points at different things on each of them. A built-in side-by-side and an integrated column are not the same service situation, and a dual-fuel range and an induction range fail in different halves.

- **French door and bottom freezer** — The freezer drawer seal is the usual culprit, and a drawer that is overloaded at the back will hold it open a fraction all day.
- **Side-by-side** — Tall doors, long gaskets, and more chance of a section that no longer makes contact.
- **Cabinets with an in-door ice maker** — Frost specifically around the bucket is usually the bucket's own seal rather than the cabinet's.

### The two mechanisms

Warm air carries water. When it meets a surface below freezing the water leaves it and stays behind as frost — so any path for warm air into a freezer becomes frost somewhere. Separately, a freezer is designed to frost up on its evaporator and to melt it off on a schedule; when that schedule stops running, the ice simply accumulates. The first mechanism frosts the whole compartment. The second frosts the back.

### Why it matters more than it looks

Frost on the evaporator is not cosmetic — it is insulation on the part that is supposed to be removing heat, and airflow past it falls as it grows. A cabinet that is a few degrees warm and heavily frosted is usually one problem, not two.

A door or drawer not sealing

The commonest cause in this climate, and the one that keeps a repair from lasting.

The defrost circuit

Heater, thermostat or sensor. Frost builds every cycle instead of being cleared.

### Can I just defrost it manually every few months?

You can, and people do. It is worth knowing what you are choosing: if the cause is a seal, you are letting humid air into the cabinet continuously between defrosts, which costs electricity and shortens compressor life.

### There is frost on the food but not on the walls.

That is usually air moving over food that is not sealed, plus a compartment that cycles through a wide temperature range. Better packaging fixes most of it.
