### The filter, then the hose, then the pump

The debris filter behind the lower front panel is designed to be opened by the owner, has its own small drain hose for the purpose, and in our experience has never been opened. What comes out of it is frequently the whole answer. After that it is the drain hose — how far it goes into the standpipe matters in both directions — and only then the pump and its impeller.

Open the debris filter

Behind the lower access panel, and it holds more water than anyone expects. Coins, hair clips and a surprising number of underwires come out of it.

Check the hose and the standpipe

Too far in and it siphons, not far enough and it comes out, wrongly looped and the pump cannot lift the column of water sitting in it.

Test the pump rather than assuming it

One that runs and moves nothing is a different part from one that never starts, and they cost differently.

Clean the filter housing while it is open

It holds standing water between washes and it is where the smell people complain about actually lives.

More than you expect. A shallow tray and a towel, not a cup, and open the little drain hose beside the filter first if there is one.
