A microwave that will not start is usually a door interlock or a keypad, and both are repairable. One that runs and does not heat is the high-voltage side — magnetron, diode, capacitor — and that is where the arithmetic starts to matter. Take the installation into account

A countertop unit that will not heat is often not worth repairing. The same failure in an over-the-range unit or a combination wall oven usually is, because you are not replacing a cabinet and an installation as well.

Discharge before anything else

The high-voltage capacitor holds a lethal charge after the appliance is unplugged. Nothing is touched until it has been discharged properly.

Test the high-voltage side rather than replacing it
