A ventless heat-pump dryer does not make heat and throw it away; it moves heat around, condenses the moisture out of the air and drains or collects it. So there is no duct, no element and no vent — and instead a condenser, a filter in front of it, a drain path and a sealed circuit. Most calls on these machines end at the condenser filter, which needs attention far more often than owners are told.

Find and clean the condenser filter

It needs attention far more often than the manual's owner expects, and a clogged one turns a healthy machine into one that takes four hours per load.

Behind a panel at the bottom on most machines, and a great many have never been opened. It turns a slow machine into a useless one.

Check the drain path

These collect the water they condense, and a blocked drain or a full tank stops the machine in ways that look electrical.

Measure the circuit before quoting

The sealed refrigeration side is a different order of repair from a filter, and the difference should be known before you are asked to decide.

Not necessarily. These are slower than vented dryers by design and always were. What is not normal is a machine that has got noticeably slower, and that is usually the condenser.
