### The cheapest part in the appliance, and the most expensive failure

A gasket does not break, it degrades — so nobody notices, and what shows up instead is a cooling complaint, an icing complaint or a machine that runs constantly. The job is the seal plus the alignment, because a new gasket fitted to a door that has dropped on its hinge fails in exactly the same way. On refrigerators, dishwashers, washers and ovens it is the same principle and the same test.

Test the seal properly

A dollar bill closed in the door should drag on the way out, all the way round. Where it does not is where the air is getting in.

Fit it and let it settle

A new gasket comes out of its packaging with a memory of the box. It is fitted, worked into place and checked again rather than tested cold.

Adjust the door if it needs it

A heavy door that has settled on its hinge over ten years does not look wrong and does not seal. Alignment is part of this job when it is needed, and it is often what makes the repair last.

Test the whole length again

The paper test at intervals right round the door, on both doors, before we leave.

### How do I test a seal myself?

Close the door on a dollar bill and pull. It should drag on the way out, all the way round the door. Anywhere it slides out freely is where the air is getting in.
