### Four things checked before a pump is mentioned

The filter at the bottom of the tub, which twists out by hand and which most owners have never opened. The drain hose and its high loop. The connection at the disposer or air gap. And, on a machine that has never drained properly since it was fitted, the knockout plug in the disposer inlet that the installer did not remove. Only after those four is the pump the answer.

Filter and sump

The filter assembly at the bottom of the tub comes out by hand and is the single most common cause. Most owners do not know it exists.

The drain path

Hose kinks, the high loop, the air gap, and — on a machine that has never drained since it was installed — whether the knockout plug in the disposer inlet was ever removed.

Then the pump

Tested, not assumed. A pump that runs and moves nothing is different from one that does not run at all, and they are different parts.

### There is always a little water in the bottom. Is that wrong?

A small amount in the sump is normal and keeps the seals from drying out. Standing water above the filter is not.
