An over-the-range unit is also the cooktop’s ventilation and light, is screwed to the wall and the cabinet above, and replacing it is a two-person job with a chance the new one does not match the cabinet cut-out. The microwave half of a combination wall oven is not replaceable at all on its own. The same problem has three different answers, and which one you get depends entirely on where the appliance sits. ### Fifty codes, and what they are for Samsung’s microwave table is the most detailed thing it publishes about any appliance, and most of it is sensors: gas or PH, temperature, steam, humidity, weight. That level of detail is useful because it tells you where the machine thinks the problem is before anybody opens it — and, occasionally, that the problem is a sensor rather than the thing it was sensing. ### The one repair we will talk you out of A countertop unit out of warranty that will not heat. We will still come and tell you what it is, and we will tell you on the phone first that the answer is often a new microwave. We would rather say that once, on the phone, than twice on an invoice. We would rather say that once, on the phone, than twice on an invoice. ### It runs but it does not heat. The classic microwave failure, and the one where the economics have to be honest. Not heating usually means the high-voltage side — magnetron, diode, capacitor, or a door interlock that is not letting it fire — and on a countertop unit the repair can approach the price of a new one. On an over-the-range or a combination oven it very often does not, because you are not replacing a cabinet, a vent and an installation as well. We will tell you which situation you are in before you spend anything. ### What do the C- and E- codes mean? Samsung groups them by what is reporting. The C- family is sensors and communication: C-10 to C-12 the gas or PH sensor, C-20 to C-22 the temperature sensor, C-70 to C-72 steam, C-d0 to C-d2 door or key, C-F0 to C-F2 communication. The E- family is longer and more specific, from E-01 open error through the cooking-time and weight errors to the EEPROM and communication codes in the E-5x and E-8x range. Read the exact characters to us; on this table the digit matters. ### The vent fan is weak on my over-the-range unit. Filters first — the grease filters underneath and, on a recirculating installation, the charcoal filter behind the grille, which almost nobody knows is there and which Samsung publishes a replacement procedure for. After that it is the blower or the damper. It is worth fixing: a weak vent over a cooktop puts the grease somewhere, and that somewhere is the rest of the kitchen. ### It turns on by itself, or beeps for no reason. Both are things Samsung documents rather than mysteries. The panels are capacitive and sensitive, and a sleeve brushing the front while you load the cooktop below is enough to start something.
