# Samsung ice makers

### Five layouts, and why that matters before anyone opens the door

Samsung puts the ice maker in the freezer door, in the fresh-food compartment, in the bottom of a bottom-freezer cabinet, in the top of a top-freezer, and — on the cabinets that make more than one shape of ice — in a dedicated cubed and Ice Bites assembly. Those are different machines with different fill paths, different sensors and, as Samsung’s own five support articles show, different reset procedures. Naming the cabinet is the first useful thing you can do.

### The failures that repeat

Frozen solid. Not filling. Filling but not releasing. Making far too much and jamming. Slow. Leaking. Almost all of them come back to one of four causes — the compartment temperature, warm moist air getting in, the water supply, or the module itself — and the order matters, because three of those four are cheaper than the fourth.

### No codes, and we will not invent any

Samsung publishes no error codes for ice makers. ### The ice maker has frozen into a solid block. What now?

It is the classic Samsung ice-maker failure and it usually has a cause upstream: the compartment is not staying cold enough, or warm wet air is reaching it. In this climate that is very often a door or a bucket seal. Clearing the ice gets you ice again for a few weeks; finding out what let the moisture in is what stops it coming back, and that is the part worth paying somebody for.

### Which reset do I use? There seem to be several.

There are five, and they are not interchangeable — Samsung publishes one each for the ice maker in the fridge compartment, in the back of the freezer door, in a bottom freezer, in a top freezer, and for cubed and Ice Bites. Which one you need depends on where the ice maker physically sits in your cabinet. If you tell us the model number we will tell you which of the five applies, and whether a reset is even the right move.

### It makes ice, just very slowly. Is that a problem?

Sometimes it is not. Ice production depends on how cold the freezer is holding and how much the household is taking, and a great many of these calls end with a machine working to specification and a family that has grown. But slow ice that used to be fast is a real signal, and it usually points at temperature, the water supply, or a filter that is well past its interval — South Florida water is not kind to the six-month figure on the box.

Two families: the fill is overshooting, or something is melting that should not be. Overshoot is a valve or a fill-tube problem; melting is warm air, a defrost circuit running too often, or a compartment that is not being held cold enough. It is worth photographing before you mop it up — where the water sits narrows it a lot.
